Polygraph
A polygraph, commonly referred to as a lie detector, is a scientifically developed instrument designed to simultaneously measure and record multiple physiological responses, including blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, electrodermal activity (galvanic skin response), and other autonomic indicators.
During a polygraph examination, the examinee is asked a carefully structured series of questions relating to specific facts and circumstances relevant to the investigation or assessment. The physiological responses are recorded as polygraph charts (polygrams), which are subsequently analyzed and interpreted by a qualified polygraph examiner (polygraph expert) trained in the detection of deception.
The term "polygraph" is derived from the Greek words poly (many) and graphein (to write), literally meaning "many writings" or "many recordings", reflecting the instrument's ability to record multiple physiological parameters simultaneously.
Among the world's most prestigious and internationally recognized accredited institutions for polygraph education and certification are the American Polygraph Association (APA) and the Chicago Polygraph Institute (CPI).
How Does a Polygraph Examination Proceed?
A professional polygraph examination follows a structured and standardized procedure to ensure the reliability, accuracy, and integrity of the results.
-
Request Submission – The process begins when the Client (the party requesting the examination) submits a request for a polygraph examination. The date, time, and purpose of the examination are discussed and agreed upon.
-
Case Review – The polygraph examiner gathers and reviews all relevant information and documentation relating to the case.
-
Payment Confirmation – The Client is required to pay the examination fee at least three (3) days prior to the scheduled examination.
-
Preparation of Test Questions – Based on the available case information, the examiner develops a series of professionally structured and validated test questions.
-
Pre-Test Interview – A confidential pre-test interview is conducted with the Examinee (the person being tested) to discuss the case and explain the examination procedure.
-
Voluntary Consent – Before the examination begins, the Examinee must sign a Voluntary Consent Form, confirming that participation is entirely voluntary.
-
Review of the Questions – Each test question is reviewed and discussed with the Examinee to ensure that it is fully understood before the examination starts.
-
Polygraph Examination – The instrumented polygraph test is conducted while the examinee's physiological responses are recorded and monitored.
-
Analysis of the Polygraph Charts – The recorded physiological data (polygrams) are thoroughly analyzed and interpreted by a qualified and certified polygraph examiner.
-
Presentation of the Results – The examination results are disclosed exclusively to the Client (the party who commissioned the examination), in accordance with professional ethics and confidentiality requirements.
Examination Duration
A standard polygraph examination typically lasts between 120 and 180 minutes, depending on the complexity of the case and the scope of the examination.
EQUIPMENT
At Solo Polygraph, we provide professional polygraph examination services using the Lafayette LX5000-SW Computerized Polygraph System, developed by Lafayette Instrument Company (USA)—the global leader in polygraph technology and forensic instrumentation.
The LX5000-SW is one of the world's most advanced computerized polygraph systems, specifically designed to assist in the scientific assessment of truthfulness and deception. During an examination, the system simultaneously records multiple physiological responses, including cardiovascular activity, respiration, electrodermal activity (galvanic skin response), and other autonomic indicators while the examinee answers carefully structured questions relating to specific facts under investigation.
The recorded physiological data are displayed as polygraph charts (polygrams) and are subsequently analyzed and interpreted by a qualified and certified polygraph examiner in accordance with internationally accepted professional standards and testing methodologies.

EFFECTIVENESS
Can a deceptive examinee successfully pass a polygraph examination without the deception being detected?
In the vast majority of professionally conducted examinations, attempts to deceive the polygraph are detected. A modern computerized polygraph is a highly sophisticated forensic instrument that has been used for decades as an investigative tool worldwide. When administered by a qualified and experienced polygraph examiner using validated testing techniques, polygraph examinations achieve a high degree of accuracy.
The scientific principle underlying polygraph testing is based on the measurement of involuntary psychophysiological responses associated with psychological stress and cognitive processing. During a deceptive response, the human body produces a complex series of autonomic physiological reactions that are regulated by the autonomic (sympathetic) nervous system and are not subject to conscious voluntary control.
These physiological changes may include variations in:
-
Cardiovascular activity (blood pressure and heart rate)
-
Respiratory patterns
-
Electrodermal activity (galvanic skin response)
-
Other autonomic physiological indicators
The polygraph continuously records these physiological responses using multiple highly sensitive sensors attached to the examinee throughout the examination. Even subtle physiological changes are accurately measured and recorded in real time.
Although an individual may attempt to control outward behaviour or consciously suppress visible signs of stress, voluntary control does not extend to the involuntary physiological functions regulated by the autonomic nervous system. Consequently, modern polygraph instrumentation is designed to detect patterns of physiological activity that may be associated with deception.
Following completion of the examination, the recorded polygraph charts (polygrams) are carefully analyzed and interpreted by a qualified polygraph examiner. By evaluating changes in electrodermal activity, cardiovascular function, respiratory responses, and other recorded physiological data in relation to specific examination questions, the examiner determines whether the physiological response patterns are consistent with truthfulness or indicative of deception.
It is important to note that a polygraph examination does not detect lies directly. Rather, it objectively records physiological responses that are scientifically evaluated by a trained examiner using internationally recognized testing protocols and standardized scoring methods.
ACCURACY
Can I be confident that the results of a polygraph examination are accurate?
Yes. When a polygraph examination is conducted by a qualified and certified polygraph examiner, using scientifically validated testing techniques, appropriate examination procedures, and modern computerized equipment, it is recognized as one of the most reliable investigative methods available for assessing truthfulness and deception.
Over the past 75 years, more than 250 scientific studies have examined the validity, reliability, and accuracy of polygraph testing. According to the American Polygraph Association (Polygraph Issues and Answers, 1996), extensive research has consistently demonstrated a high level of accuracy when standardized testing protocols are followed.
In addition, a review of 12 independent studies involving 2,174 real-life criminal and investigative cases conducted since 1980 concluded that the decisions reached by qualified polygraph examiners were approximately 98% accurate (Norman Ansley, Validity and Reliability of Polygraph Decisions in Real Cases, 1990).
When a polygraph examination is performed under proper conditions—including:
-
internationally accepted testing procedures;
-
a qualified and experienced polygraph examiner;
-
a suitable examination environment;
-
comprehensive case information; and
-
professionally developed examination questions,
the reliability of the examination is exceptionally high.
The Lafayette LX5000-SW Computerized Polygraph System, manufactured by Lafayette Instrument Company (USA), is one of the world's leading professional polygraph systems. According to validation studies and manufacturer-supported research, when used in accordance with established testing standards and interpreted by a qualified examiner, the system is capable of achieving accuracy levels of approximately 98% in validated testing protocols.
It is important to note that no forensic or investigative technique can guarantee absolute (100%) accuracy in every individual case. The quality of a polygraph examination depends not only on the equipment used but also on the examiner's qualifications, adherence to internationally recognized testing protocols, the suitability of the testing environment, and the cooperation of the examinee. For these reasons, internationally recognized professional organizations generally describe modern computerized polygraph examinations as demonstrating very high scientific reliability, rather than claiming absolute certainty.
